PROFILE

This is a picture of "Snow Flower". He was the best snowman we ever made. We used a melon rind for the mouth, so he looked particularly friendly. Every morning my three little girls, Chloe, Phoebe, and Naomi (pictured) would bound up to the window and wave "Good Morning" to Snow Flower. His right arm was raised up in a permanent salutation and it stayed that way even as he mostly melted away. Finally, he was just a pillar of snow (his head was gone!), but with that arm raised up my children still called out and talked to him.

As a children's author and illustrator I'm extremely lucky. I have three children who inspire me and keep me on my toes every day. I spend my time pondering questions like "How did the cow jump over the moon?" and trying to figure out just how long it would take to dig to China.

Many people ask me how I manage to get anything done, working at home with three small children around, but I'm left wondering how anyone can write for kids without having at least one child in their life. It's because I've spent so much time reading to toddlers that I know the value of a book with a large orange ball on every page, like in ANDY! AND THE FLYING TOASTER TANGERINE, or how helpful my book, TIE YOUR SHOES! is in teaching this important skill. As I look towards the future and watch my kids grow, I realize I should probably write a book about ducks.
